Serena Williams, professional tennis player, ranked world No. 1 in singles by the (WTA) Women’s Tennis Association for 319 weeks, is now, as she said, “evolving away from the tennis court.” In a story for Vogue, Williams discusses her crossroads, as she was struggling to choose between Tennis and her family. Letting go of tennis was something she didn’t want to admit to. As a woman, it is a difficult decision that could be judged by so many. Choosing your career is seen as selfish while choosing family is seen as the obvious choice for a woman or non-feminist. However, Williams chose what she felt was right for her. She wanted to focus on growing her family.

She already has so many accomplishments and has used her voice to help many people. Serena Williams has won a record 23 Grand Slam singles titles and jointly holds the record for longest run as the No.1 ranked female player. Williams has also fought for woman’s rights, mental health, and against the inequality affecting African Americans.

Serena Williams made a significant impact, so it makes sense why her evolution away from tennis affects many sports fans. Williams letting go of the game she is so passionate about, brings a great sadness to her and every fan. However, as fans we can see that she is ready and we are happy for her, support her and wish her luck.
